What we Believe and Teach

What River Rock Church and The Alliance believes about God, how He relates to us, and how we relate to Him is foundational in its teachings. The Alliance wholeheartedly serves God and the people of His world, based soundly on the Bible. We live and die by these words and believe they bring the only life worth living—one wholly committed to the King Jesus.

How do you live your life so authentically that there is no question about what you believe? Some people call it their creed, others call it dogma or position. Basically, doctrine is the bedrock on which you build your beliefs—a body or system of teachings relating to a particular subject.

Here is Our Statement of Faith – What we Believe and Teach (Scripture on this page from ESV Bible)

ABOUT GOD

There is one God,

  • Deuteronomy 6:4  “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

who is infinitely perfect,

  • Matthew 5:48  You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

existing eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • Matthew 28:19  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

ABOUT JESUS CHRIST

Jesus Christ is the true God and the true man.

  • Philippians 2:6  who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

  • Luke 1:34  And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

He died upon the cross, the Just for the unjust,

  • 1 Peter 3:18  For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

as a substitutionary sacrifice,

  • Hebrews 2:9  But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

and all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood.

  • Romans 5:9  Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

He arose from the dead according to the Scriptures.

  • Acts 2:23-24  this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.  God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

He is now at the right hand of Majesty on high as our great High Priest.

  • Hebrews 8:1  Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,

He will come again to establish His kingdom, righteousness and peace.

  • Matthew 26:64:  Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is a divine person,

  • John 14:15-18  “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,  even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.  “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

sent to indwell, guide, teach, empower the believer,

  • John 16:13  When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
  • Acts 1:8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

and convince the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment.

  • John 16:7-11  Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.  And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:  concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;  concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;  concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

ABOUT THE WORD OF GOD

The Old and New Testaments, inerrant as originally given, were verbally inspired by God and are a complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men. They constitute the divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice.

  • 2 Peter 1:20-21 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
  • 2 Timothy 3:15-16 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness

ABOUT HUMANITY

Man was originally created in the image and likeness of God:

  • Genesis 1:27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

he fell through disobedience, incurring thereby both physical and spiritual death. All men are born with a sinful nature,

  • Romans 3:23  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

are separated from the life of God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:20-23  But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.  For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.  For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.  But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.

The portion of the unrepentant and unbelieving is existence forever in conscious torment

  • Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

and that of the believer, in everlasting joy and bliss.

  • Revelation 21:1-4  Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

ABOUT SALVATION

Salvation has been provided through Jesus Christ for all men; and those who repent and believe in Him are born again of the Holy Spirit, receive the gift of eternal life, and become the children of God.

  • Titus 3:4-7  But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared,  not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,  whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,  that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

ABOUT SANCTIFICATION

It is the will of God that each believer should be filled with the Holy Spirit and be sanctified wholly,

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:23  Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

being separated from sin and the world and fully dedicated to the will of God, thereby receiving power for holy living and effective service.

  • Acts 1:8  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

This is both a crisis and a progressive experience wrought in the life of the believer subsequent to conversion.

  • Romans 6:1-14  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?  Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?  Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?  Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,  knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.  For he who has died has been freed from sin.  Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,  knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.  For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.  Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.  And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.  For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

ABOUT HEALING

Provision is made in the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ for the healing of the mortal body.

  • Matthew 8:16-17  When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.”

Prayer for the sick and anointing with oil are taught in the Scriptures and are privileges for the Church in this present age

  • James 5:13-16  Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.  Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.  Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

ABOUT THE CHURCH

The Church consists of all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, are redeemed through His blood, and are born again of the Holy Spirit. Christ is the Head of the Body, the Church,

  • Ephesians 1:22-23  And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church,  which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

which has been commissioned by Him to go into all the world as a witness, preaching the gospel to all nations

  • Matthew 28:19-20  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

The local church is a body of believers in Christ who are joined together for the worship of God, for edification through the Word of God, for prayer, fellowship, the proclamation of the gospel, and observance of the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper

  • Acts 2:41-47  Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.  And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.  Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.  Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,  and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.  So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,  praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

ABOUT THE RESURRECTION

There shall be a bodily resurrection of the just and of the unjust; for the former, a resurrection unto life

  • 1 Corinthians 15:20-23  But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.  For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.  But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.

for the latter, a resurrection unto judgment.

  • John 5:28  Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice “

ABOUT THE RETURN OF CHRIST

The second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is imminent

  • Hebrews 10:37  For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay

and will be personal, visible, and premillennial.

  • Luke 21:27  And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.)

This is the believer’s blessed hope and is a vital truth which is an incentive to holy living and faithful service.

  • Titus 2:11-14: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12  training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13  waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14  who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
